Afterimage Privacy Policy

Afterimage (called Hafıza on Turkish systems) helps you find again what you have seen on your Mac's screen. Everything it records stays on your Mac. This page explains exactly what that means.

LAST UPDATED / 25 OCTOBER 2026

What Afterimage records

  • Compressed images of your screen (HEVC video), taken when the screen changes.
  • The text on your screen: read from apps through macOS Accessibility, or from the images with on-device text recognition (Apple Vision).
  • The app name, window title, web address in browsers, and the time.
  • For the journal: how long you were active in each app.
  • Afterimage's own battery, processor and disk usage.

What Afterimage never records

  • Password fields, and the screen while secure keyboard input is on.
  • Password managers (1Password, Bitwarden, Keychain Access, Passwords and others) and any app you exclude. Their windows never enter the screen images.
  • Private or incognito browser windows, and websites you exclude (details in the next section).
  • Anything while your Mac is locked, the screen saver is running, or the Mac is asleep.
  • Anything while you have paused recording.
  • Audio, camera and microphone: never.

Private browser windows

Every browser window on screen is checked, not only the one in front, on every display (Safari, Chrome, Arc, Edge, Brave, Firefox, Opera, Vivaldi and others):

  • If such a window is in front, nothing is recorded for that display: no image, no text, no window title.
  • If it is behind other windows, its whole area is covered with a flat color in the image, even where other windows overlap it. Text recognition never sees the covered area.
  • A browser window that cannot be checked (for example, because Accessibility access is not granted) is treated the same way. Without Accessibility access, browser windows are therefore not recorded while “Skip private / incognito browser windows” is on.
  • If such a window opens, closes or moves between two frames, that frame is skipped.

Where your data is stored

Only on this Mac, in ~/Library/Application Support/Hafiza/:

  • The folder is readable only by your user account.
  • It is excluded from Spotlight.
  • By default it is excluded from Time Machine backups.

Network connections

Afterimage has no server, no account, no cloud sync and no analytics. Your screen images, text and activity are never sent anywhere. Afterimage connects to the internet for two things only:

  • License validation: your license key and your Mac's name are sent to Polar's license service (polar.sh) when you activate a key, and occasionally (about once a week) to check that it is still valid.
  • Update checks: Sparkle checks the release list on eren.click for a newer version. This sends standard HTTP information (such as your IP address, app version and macOS version).

AI features

The daily summary and “Ask” use Apple's on-device language model (Apple Intelligence) and run on this Mac.

Access for AI assistants (MCP) is off by default. If you turn it on, assistants running on this Mac (for example Claude) can search your memory, read only. What those assistants do with what they find is governed by their own privacy policies. You can turn access off at any time.

You are in control

  • Pause recording at any time.
  • Delete the last 5, 15 or 60 minutes, or today.
  • Delete a single moment; its image is also removed from the video files.
  • Erase your entire memory.
  • Choose how long images and text are kept, and the maximum disk space.
  • Lock Afterimage with Touch ID or your password.
